Set in 1929 in the fictional Blandings Castle, Timothy Spall plays the amiable but befuddled Lord Emsworth (Clarence to his friends), who struggles to keep his dysfunctional family in order and usually adds to the chaos himself. All Clarence wants is to be left at peace with his beloved pig The Empress but his plans are often thwarted by an array of friends, visitors, servants and spongers. Jennifer Saunders stars as his indomitable sister Connie, Jack Farthing as hapless, unlucky-in-love son Freddy and Mark Williams as loyal and long- suffering butler Beach. There are number of well-known faces that make guest appearances during the series. David Walliams stars in two episodes as Rupert Baxter, Clarence’s new secretary who is hired by Connie to help bring some order to Clarence’s life. Paloma Faith plays Georgia, a dancer from London, who accompanies Freddie to Blandings and creates quite a stir with Beach. David Bamber plays Herr Schnellhund, Clarence’s irritatingly bearded dance teacher. Tony Maudsley plays Cyril Wellbeloved, who has the all-important job of looking after The Empress. Sam Hoare plays ‘Beefy’ Bingham who dreams of marrying Connie’s daughter Gertrude, much to Connie’s dismay. Robert Bathurst plays Clarence’s rival Sir Gregory and Jessica Hynes portrays sophisticated widow Daphne. Ron Donachie plays head gardener McAllister. Blandings was filmed on location at Crom Castle in Northern Ireland with the support of Northern Ireland Screen.
6/6. Clarence is forced to wear his Sunday best for a visit by the sophisticated Lady Daphne and her spoilt brat Huxley, but when the wealthy widow flirts with the befuddled lord and even takes an interest in his pig, Beach and Connie become suspicious of her motives. Meanwhile, after having his fingers burnt too many times, Freddie has sworn off women entirely. But then he meets the glorious Monica, who works in his father’s pigsty. Jessica Hynes (Twenty Twelve, Spaced) guest stars in the PG Wodehouse comedy, with Timothy Spall, Jennifer Saunders and Jack Farthing. Last in the series.

My latest timelapse in a series from the snow-covered Mourne Mountains County Down Northern Ireland . The High Mournes have to rank as one of my favourite places to hike. I am continually drawn back to the Mournes to photograph the changing seasons and light. I frequently walk these ranges. Part of their attraction lies in how the Mourne Mountains change throughout the year. They never fail to take by breath away.

The Low angle of the sun provides beautiful dramatic lighting against the mountain landscape. This photograph was taken at sunset on the Brandy Pad after two hour trek into the mountains along the difficult and steep the Bloody Bridge trail. If you are going into mountains this time of year make sure you are prepared to stay out or leave time to make your exit - getting to your location is only the 'halfway' point. It is too tempting to stay out that little bit longer for that perfect light. On my return from this shoot I made much of my descent in the dark, fortunately I had a good torch with me, but wouldn't recommend this as the Terrain is extremely challenging.
The Adelaide Maintenance Depot is a purpose built facility on a brownfield site, that serves Tranlink’s new fleet of trains that will be delivered in 2012. The site is a 24hr facility that will provide stabling for trains, re-fuelling and train wash facilities along with a Maintenance and Cleaning Shed and associated offices and storage.

The design concept was to create a hierarchy of buildings across the site, with the Depot being the main building and all other buildings would use the same palette of materials to create a cohesive identity for the site facilities.

The Depot is over 200m long and is a slick linear box clad in silver metallic cladding. The interior is bathed in diffuse daylight through translucent Kalwall cladding. The associated Accommodation Block is articulated at first floor as a projecting, floating box in distinctive red cladding. It projects at high level beyond the main shed, its dynamic form referencing the trains within.

The buildings base is detailed in simple blue grey brick, that is used throughout the rest of the site for ancillary buildings. Careful detailing and co-ordination of services has ensured that the box forms are uncluttered and bold. The project is due for completion in October 2012.

Appearing alongside Timothy Spall, Jennifer Saunders, Mark Williams and Jack Farthing, the comedian will take up the role of Rupert Baxter, a secretary drafted in by Connie to sort out Clarence’s disorganised affairs.

Talking about his character in the BBC1 comedy, Walliams said: “Rupert is very fastidious. He is quite contemptuous of the upper classes. He’s middle-class and wants to organise everything, but Clarence ends up as his nemesis.”

The actor turned Britain’s Got Talent judge is well known for playing outlandish characters and was eager to take up the role of Baxter.

“I adore PG Wodehouse,” said Walliams. “I have loved him since first reading Jeeves And Wooster when Fry and Laurie played them on the TV. Even then, I realised that Wodehouse is a comic master. As soon as I got the call about this, I was desperate to do it.”

Interview with David Walliams

Please talk us through your character, Rupert Baxter.

Connie brings Rupert in as a secretary to organise Clarence’s life. Rupert is very fastidious. He is quite contemptuous of the upper classes. He’s middle-class and wants to organise everything, but Clarence ends up as his nemesis.

What attracted you to Blandings?

I adore PG Wodehouse. I have loved him since first reading Jeeves And Wooster when Fry and Laurie played them on the TV. Even then, I realised that Wodehouse is a comic master. As soon as I got the call about this, I was desperate to do it.

Any other reasons?

Yes, unlike some things I’ve done, this is not rude. It’s family orientated. It’s come at the right time. There is currently a big renaissance in costume dramas, but there hasn’t yet been a comic one.

Does Blandings also represent quite a change of tack for you?

Absolutely. When I did Britain’s Got Talent, I was quite concerned that once you’ve appeared as yourself in such a major way, it might be hard to go back to acting. Actors should have some mystery about them, and it’s hard to accept them in roles when you know too much about them. So it was great to be offered this part. Also, I’ve not done that much period in the past.

Were you eager to work with Timothy Spall, too?

Yes. I know Tim quite well because I’ve worked with his son Rafe before. I’d always thought that I would love to work with Tim as he is one my favourite actors, and the experience was not disappointing. What is excellent is that he’s not obvious casting as the aristocratic Clarence. You see him in Mike Leigh films or Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and he’s very different. He’s such a great actor because he can do anything. A lot of actors have played silly posh characters in the past, but Tim can do it in a very original and very funny way.

Why do we like period drama so much?

I used to watch Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes at home and my mother would say, “Where did they get that china from?” She was not at all interested in the mystery. Much of the interest in costume drama stems from the production values. Yesterday I was driving a Royal Enfield vintage motorbike on set – where else would I get the chance to do that? I love all the clothes, the shoes, the jackets the collars and the tie pins. I’m obsessed with details.

Are these stories still relevant?

Yes. They may seem at first to be quite frivolous tales about, say, a misplaced letter. But there is actually quite a bit of social satire in there which will chime with audiences. Class still dictates a lot of things in this country. But above all, these stories are very funny and that’s why they have endured. Good humour lasts.

A big thumbs up for Blandings from me. Well done to all involved in the production at Crom Castle County Fermanagh.

Article Radio Times by Alan Franks 13 January 2013

On the face of it, Timothy Spall isn’t the actor most likely to be cast as Lord Emsworth, presiding super-toff at Blandings Castle. When it comes to playing characters from classic English literature, this son of a south London working-class family would seem more at home among the urban gargoyles of his beloved Dickens. But wait, wasn’t that him as Churchill in The King’s Speech? And wasn’t that him again at the Olympics Closing Ceremony, when Winston popped out of the top of Big Ben?

The fact is that 55-year-old Spall’s jowly charisma has, for the past 30 years, been moulded to roles at every point of the social spectrum from Don Armado in Love’s Labour’s Lost (in 2000) to Fagin in Oliver Twist (2007). When considering Clarence Threepwood, ninth Earl of Emsworth, he does so not with the deference of a pleb but with the respect of an intellectually engaged performer. In fact, since we’re talking of Shakespeare and Dickens, Spall says that “Plum” (Wodehouse’s nickname) is not incongruous in such company.

When Spall received the Blandings script (by Guy Andrews), he was in a trailer in a Leeds car park filming last year’s BBC1 series, The Syndicate. “From the first page I was enthralled,” he says. “It was like drinking a beautiful, nourishing soup — the cleverness of his language, the idiosyncratic form that it takes. Not just beautiful but ridiculous as well, in some places so much so that I laughed until I couldn’t breathe.”

As Blandings readers will know, the stories revolve around the situation of Lord Emsworth, alternately serene in his kingdom in the company of his adored Empress of Blandings (a prize pig), and beleaguered by the rage and resentment of Connie (played by Jennifer Saunders), eldest of his ten sisters.

“Here’s someone who looks like an inheritor of enormous privilege and an education way above his intelligence,” says Spall. “So yes, an aristocratic buffoon. Yet one of the most interesting things about him is that, while there may be this absent-minded lunacy, he’s still the Earl, still top of the heap, and somewhere along the line he has a gravitas that manages to prevail.”

What emerges from Spall’s study is an earl paradoxically turned into an underdog by his domestic circumstances. “I’m deeply touched by his predicament,” he says. “All sorts of people are thrust into positions they might not want to be in. Give a title to the wrong person and there’s both tragedy and comedy in it. Particularly when it’s handled by such a scintillating talent as Wodehouse. I’m not saying he has the breadth of Dickens or Shakespeare but, as a purveyor of this particular genre, no one has bettered him.”

Might Wodehouse have been offering a parallel, even unwittingly, with the monarchy? “I don’t know. What I believe these stories say is that sweetness of spirit, humanity, which Clarence has in abundance, are the most important things. He never gets beyond being a grown-up child, which leaves him with this delightful innocence.”

Interview with Jennifer Saunders BBC’s Blandings Photographer Aidan Monaghan

Jennifer Saunders BBC’s Blandings Photographer Aidan Monaghan

One of the most highly anticipated comedies of the New Year would have to be the BBC’s Blanding’s – a sumptuous all star take on the famous P.G. Wodehouse stories. Here one of the stars Jennifer Saunders tells us what drew her to the role and about the character she plays.

Of the role she says ” Guy Andrews’ scripts were laugh-out-loud funny. That’s very rare these days. I’d sit in bed and just chortle. It was such a treat to be sent them. I’m a huge Wodehouse fan. He writes proper jokes. They are crafted in an extremely funny way, which I know is so hard to do. From his descriptions you can see immediately that it’s funny.

Meanwhile of her character she tells us “Connie is the sister of Clarence, Lord Emsworth. She is a frustrated battle-axe. She is frustrated because she’s not quite a battle-axe, but would like to be more of one. She is also a frustrated romantic. When she is alone, she can be fun. She sits there, eating Turkish Delight, wrapped in an exotic shawl and is transported to her own special world. She imagines she is travelling around the Middle East. She has all these romantic ideas. But then, sadly reality hits, and she remembers she had to sort out the staff or her niece’s marriage. She has to do everything herself – Clarence doesn’t even know the nieces’ names!”

What appealed to you about Blandings?

Guy Andrews’ scripts were laugh-out-loud funny. That’s very rare these days. I’d sit in bed and just chortle. It was such a treat to be sent them.

Have you always liked PG Wodehouse?

Yes, I’m a huge Wodehouse fan. He writes proper jokes. They are crafted in an extremely funny way, which I know is so hard to do. From his descriptions you can see immediately that it’s funny.

Please outline your character Connie to us.

Connie is the sister of Clarence, Lord Emsworth. She is a frustrated battle-axe. She is frustrated because she’s not quite a battle-axe, but would like to be more of one. She is also a frustrated romantic.

Tell us more.

She has to do everything herself – Clarence doesn’t even know the nieces’ names!

How has she ended up at Blandings?

Her husband has died, so she’s having to live with her brother and his ridiculous son Freddie. Because of primogeniture, Clarence has all the money and power, but she is so much more capable. She is constantly explaining stuff to him, but it never goes in. If he would only listen to what she says, she would be happy. But unfortunately he’s a total shambles. That makes for great comedy.

Have you enjoyed working with Timothy Spall?

Absolutely. I’ve adored doing scenes with him. He is fantastic. You learn a lot from performing opposite him. He’s a great actor and is always very professional. He has so many lines, and yet I’ve never seen him not know one!

Why you think Blandings will strike a chord with a modern audience?

Its pure escapism and people love pure escapism, especially in the current economic climate. It’s a lovely comic world for viewers to lose themselves in.

Are we also drawn to these very off-the-wall characters?

Definitely. The family at the heart of Blandings represent an old view of England. Even in their era, they were out of date. They’re pure eccentrics and wonderful comic figures.

Do think there is enough mileage in Blandings for another series?

Oh, yes. I read a lot of Blandings as a teenager, and there is a phenomenal amount of material. What Guy Andrews has done very cleverly is make a sitcom out of lots of diverse books. He’s brought characters together from different novels and managed to collate them all in this show. There is definitely enough material for more series. This one could run and run!
